Mauro Giaconi’s Bandera [Flag] is a three-dimensional drawing made from lines of silicone traced with a hot glue gun and tinted with graphite powder and other pigments. The line acquires body and volume, allowing the drawing to stand without a supporting surface. Resembling wire, it creates an illusion that unsettles the relationship between appearance and material reality. Overlapping patterns of wire and chain-link fencing form a surface that recalls the weave of a fabric.

The fence has recurred in Giaconi’s work since 2007, when he began drawing directly onto discarded atlases, obscuring their printed maps beneath dense layers of graphite and the unmistakable geometry of chain-link. Bandera extends this investigation. Where the earlier works kept the fence bound to the page, here it lifts off the surface and becomes an object in its own right. The fence stops representing confinement and starts enacting it.

This shift continues Giaconi’s investigation into simulation as a means of temporarily altering our perception of reality. In Bandera, wire is rendered in glue and pigment, and a barrier takes shape without the materials from which such a structure would ordinarily be made. The work occupies the space between what something looks like and what it is, turning a familiar form of division into an unsettling encounter with the instability of appearances.
