Laure Prouvost’s Ouigrow is a grass-roots, ongoing philanthropic project run from her neighboring studio in Molenbeek, where proceeds from donations and art sales are used to increase vegetation in urban areas. Human connection to the natural world is central to Prouvost’s practice; Ouigrow celebrates this relationship by encouraging flora to trespass into human-made structures, bringing greenery to inner city neighborhoods which often have been deprived of plant life. The project takes many forms, including installation, performance, song, collective plantings, seed giveaways, and pop-up flower shops. Here, Ouigrow is represented by an installation combining paintings and potted plants, in a play on the labels found in plant nurseries and flower shops. The proceeds from each painting sale will go to creating a new green space in Molenbeek. Rather than simply depicting nature, Ouigrow invites viewers to take part in making cities greener, so that art and living things grow into each other.
