"Official Welcome" is the documentation of a performance commissioned by the MICA Foundation, and first performed in November 2001 at the home of prominent collectors in New York City. Dressed elegantly in black, Fraser opens by gratefully thanking her hosts, the Foundation, her assistants, and the staff of the host museum, mimicking the ritual of official ceremonies. She then abruptly shifts voice and attitude, speaking aggressively about herself in the third person.
Fraser goes on to rapidly cycle through personas, in increasing states of undress: the urgent, lyrical political artist, the doubtful and sombre figure, the rebellious creator insulting the audience, until, naked, she suddenly exits. The performance’s power lies in her masterful range, from impeccable imitation to excess, and in a script pieced together from art essays, museum directors’ official texts, and artists’ statements. Fraser restaged it in 2003 at the Kunstverein, Hamburg, and in 2009 at the Pompidou Centre, Paris; this video captures the 2003 performance.
